Rooted in Tradition. Expressed with Soul.

Sergei Govorov is a classically trained saxophonist with a Doctorate from the prestigious Gnesin Russian Academy of Music, where he studied under the legendary Margarita Shaposhnikova — founder of the Russian School of Saxophone. His deep grounding in European classical tradition was further enriched through internships with France’s leading saxophonists — Claude DelangleJean-Denis Michat, and Vincent David — whose influence shaped his artistic perspective.

Over the past two decades, Sergei has brought the classical saxophone to life on international stages — from chamber halls in Europe to organ lofts in Russia, and major cultural festivals across the United States. His signature project, the Organ + Saxophone Duo, has delivered over 600 performances and culminated in the acclaimed 2023 release of Faith— an album featuring world-premiere recordings of contemporary works for saxophone and organ.

In 2025, Sergei released Desert Sax — a bold and lyrical album created in collaboration with acclaimed concert pianist Vladimir Khomyakov, known for his refined interpretations and international solo career. The album explores new colors of classical expression through original compositions for saxophone and piano.

Sergei actively collaborates with renowned contemporary composers, including Tiziano BedettiAd WammesNaji HakimIrina DubkovaBruce Klepper, and Hans-André Stamm — premiering and recording works that expand the expressive boundaries of the instrument.

Also in 2025, Sergei was invited by saxophonist and professor Nathan Mertens to present a masterclass and recital at CU Boulder, continuing his mission to share classical saxophone with the next generation of musicians.

Sergei’s classical repertoire spans from early transcriptions to 20th-century masterpieces and modern compositions written specifically for him. He performs as a soloist, in chamber ensembles, and with orchestras, always balancing intellectual precision with emotional depth.

Whether presenting timeless works or premiering bold new voices in contemporary classical music, Sergei invites audiences to rediscover the saxophone as a powerful and poetic instrument within the classical tradition.
